Sometimes the house that you are living in can dictate what creative projects you work on. We have these four small high windows in our livingroom and, in the heat of the summer, the sun streams in right into my husband’s eyes. He decided that he should capitalize on the sun shining in by putting up stained glass windows over top of the actual window.

The other motivation for putting something in those windows was to deter the birds from flying into the glass. We had a handful of dead birds on our deck the first summer we were in this house.

The first addition to the windows was these rainbows. We really like rainbows and have seen many over the years. Putting these up also allowed Chris to practice with the some of the solid colour glass pieces that he had.

His next idea was to create two scenes; one representing SK and one representing BC. These are the two provinces where we grew up. He finished the SK window just before Christmas.

Here it is before adding the copper foil.

Here it is reversed after soldering all the glass together.

While I was away in January, he built a frame and put it up in the leftmost window.

I love how vibrant the colours look on a sunny day.

He is working on his mountain scene. He drew it all out, cut all the glass, then changed his mind about how he wanted the scene to look. He drew a new pattern and is currently working on cutting the glass for it.

These larger projects have been a good distraction for Chris from the long dark January that we get in northern AB.

It is nice having some colour on the windows. Once his mountain scene is completed, I wonder what other stained glass projects he will come up with.. So far, I have been pleasantly surprised to see how creative my husband can be.
