My husband loves to come across pallets that people no longer want. He oohs and ahs when a pallet is made of hardwood. He smells it and marvels at the weight and the colour. What he does not do, so far, is make anything with the pallet wood.

To be fair, he has taken a lot of time taking them apart with his reciprocator saw leaving me to pound out the nail heads left in the boards.

I am then left trying to figure out some projects for this recycled wood.

My latest idea was to make these mason jar signs. Pallet boards tend to be narrow or wide; two widths. The wider boards are usually 5.5” wide. I drew a mason jar shape 4” wide by 7.5” tall. This allowed me a bit of room to cut off any rough edges on the sides of the boards.

I cut some mason jars out a few shorter pallet pieces we had lying around from other projects and shaped each one using the band saw.

I got a few ideas from Pinterest and proceeded to decorate these wood forms.

I used my wood burner and then added acrylic paint on a few.

This one is perfect for any kitchen.

It is often where people eat, have meaningful conversations or play games together.

After visiting my parents, I was reminded how often mason jars get used.
Soups, jams, jellies, fruit, pickles and even meat gets canned in jars.

This one makes me smile and I think about my dad talking about people making moonshine back in the day.

Big red barns somehow feel nostalgic to me even though we never did have a barn or even a farm for that matter.

I decided to coat three of them in matte Polycrylic and it darkened the wood a bit.

The bigger contrast showed up on the back of the wood.

The backs of them has this lovely two-tone look.
Beautiful!!

The wood is thick enough that it can stand up on its own or it could easily be hung up on a wall.

These are quick to make and I really like how they turned out so I think I will be making more.
