I recently had some fabric stars come across my Pinterest feed.

I like the way they looked but thought they could be more puffy.

I discovered the best way to make these stars puffy is the same way we used to fold notes back in Jr. high. We used to fold a paper in half then again until you are left with a strip that is about 2.5 inches wide. After that you make triangle folds until you are left with a flap at the end that you tuck in.

For this star I used a piece of material 2 inches wide by 9 inches long. If you don’t want it as thick, make it 7 inches long. This particular fabric I cut from a hand stitched pillow cover that my husband’s aunt had given us for Christmas one year. The stitched part of the pillowcase had chocolate stains on it that would not come out. This lovely plaid was the edging on the front and the entire back. I thought I would repurpose it and use in a couple of Christmas crafts and that way we would still be reminded of her gift.

After folding the triangles, hot glue the openings closed. I suppose you could glue each fold as you go but it isn’t necessary.

For each star you need three of these triangles so your piece of material would have to be at least 9”x6” to cut in three strips. You can also make stars with three different pieces of material, one triangle of each.

Stack your three triangles this way.

I prefer gluing the three triangles together vs trying to keep them in place while sewing through them.

I put just one stitch through to tighten the star up then glued on two buttons.

Gluing the button on is SO much easier than trying to sew through all the star layers and find the button hole. I had to use a thimble and needle nosed pliers to push and pull the needle through that much material. This blue plaid star was actually the last one I made after sewing all the others.

I have small amounts of a number of fabrics that my mom gave me. All that fabric was perfect for creating these stars with three different fabrics. I made the three bottom ones from a fabric strip 2.5 inches wide by 9 inches long.

I really like the way the plaid one turned out with the material all being the same.
Plaid pajama bottoms would be great for making stars of a variety of colours and the lines in the fabric are great for keeping your cutting straight.

These are really quite easy to make and a great way to use up excess fabric that you may have lying around.
