There is just something about the idea of Christmas on the farm.
I never lived on a farm nor knew of anyone that had a big red barn.
I just knew that I wanted to make myself one to add to my decorations this Christmas.
I was so excited while making this project that I only took one picture as I made it.
Materials
2X8 wood scrap
Christmas Red acrylic paint
Jumbo craft sticks
Wood for door and windows
bendable wire
Six sparkly green pipe cleaners
One sparkly silver pipecleaner
Sequins for wreath
Wood glue
hot glue
saw
sandpaper
Here is the basic barn shape. Two pieces of 2X8, one taller than the other, with 45° angles cut off the top. Cut the smaller piece in half vertically. Glue the smaller halves to the outside of the taller piece using wood glue and let dry. Paint it all red…I used Christmas red acrylic paint. This ended up being the back as I couldn’t completely cover up the writing on the wood.
For the door and window frames, I used cut pieces of hardwood flooring lip; the edge of the flooring that fits into the groove of another piece. Snip the pieces with the bandsaw to become the parts of the barn door and windows then hot glue them on.
Jumbo craft sticks became the roof edges. I snipped them with the band saw. This does make them splinter a bit so maybe some other way of cutting them would work better.
For the wreath, use a piece of wire formed into a circle creating little loops on the edges as you go. Weave sparkly green pipe cleaners through those loops. Use three pipe cleaners and then another two just wrapping around the first three. For decorations, glue on some red and clear sequins. The last thing to do is to hot glue the wreath to the barn.
Twist a green and silver sparkly pipe cleaner and glue pieces of it above the windows and doors.
Adding adornments instead of just painting on the features gives it more realistic look. You could also paint all the natural wood white before gluing it on.
Here is my barn on my farmhouse ledge along with my red pick up truck, my rustic pallet trees and my barn mason jar sign. I did not make the wooden circle above the barn but it does light up so I decided to add it in.
The best part of putting it in that location is that I can see it perfectly from my favourite chair.
Out of all the things I have made, this project has been one of my favourites.
Adding the small pieces of wood on top of the painted barn base was incredibly satisfying.
This red barn is a great addition to my Farmhouse Christmas decor.
Guess you were too young to see the barn at grandpa’s farm.
Yes, there was a large barn, he sold it to a ‘neighbour’ farmer.
