I came across a lovely site scrolling through Pinterest. Daisy and Storm is a website which offers free knitting patterns. They have these cute washcloth patterns which are all the same size. This allows you to make different ones and then attach them together as an Afghan blanket.

My first attempt was to make this heart pattern.

The patterns are offered as a grid, showing which stitches are knit and which are purl. They do include the written pattern but without the odd numbered rows. I kept forgetting to add the odd rows and had to start over four times. I decided to make myself a chart so I didn’t make any more mistakes. I also added a small row chart at the bottom so that I could cross them off as I went.

It turns out, as I look at their pattern more closely, the heart should have been purled and the outer part of the heart knit. I tried to write out the pattern from the grid instead of using the line by line pattern below. I guess I created my own version of their pattern??

My pattern is a recessed heart instead of it being a raised heart….still works I guess.

I was thinking that it would be neat to plan a baby gift, making one alphabet or number shape square for roughly each week of the pregnancy; 26 letters and 10 numbers =36 weeks.

You could also add a few shape squares like a circle, square, triangle, star and heart (of course).

I would suggest using different colours for the squares. You would probably have to use the same size/brand of yarn and always the same needles to keep the squares a consistent size.

These are really easy to make and one only took me a few hours.

    1. It turned out to be 9”x9”. I guess if I made a blanket it would be quite big but I still like the idea.
