When the house we currently live in was built, there was a cement stone facade put on certain areas of the house.

There were two pallets of stone leftover and the previous owners left it for us to use/deal with. Last summer a colony of wasps decided to build a huge nest amongst the stones so we decided that perhaps we should figure out a way to make use of them.

We have this rectangular sandy area in the middle of our yard where there was an above ground pool. Last year, weeds and crab grass grew in. When my brother in-law brought his trampoline to our place to “store”, we temporarily stuck it over that area.

I decided that I wanted to turn it into a wildflower garden. They say wildflowers will grow anywhere that weeds do. I spent a few hours with my crab grass remover and weed fork removing most of the grass and weeds that had grown in. We then made many trips down our lane from where the stones had been stored to the new area. The individual stones are quite heavy so it was a bit of a workout.

After laying down some black landscaping tarp where the wall would go, I started laying stones around the perimeter. We managed to have enough wider stones to create a wall three stones high. I used the narrow stones to create sections inside and some triangular stones to make a circle in the middle.

Yesterday, I carted some triple mix that we had delivered and dumped, and filled in each section. It was windy and smoky but I got it done.

If this wind ever dies down, I will plant the large packets “wildflower” and “butterfly garden”seeds I bought in there. I got some Larkspur and Poppy seeds from my mom that I will add in as well.

I have never had the yard space to have just a flower garden.
I am looking forward to seeing how it looks once the flowers are in bloom.
