With Mother’s Day approaching, I thought I would post an easy addition for any type of homemade bookmark.

A simple DIY gift.

Materials

scrap cardboard

Crochet cotton or embroidery thread 1-3 colours

scissors

pony bead (optional)

Instructions

Cut yourself a piece of cardboard roughly the size of your three fingers

For the next step you can choose to use 1, 2 or 3 different colours of thread

If you are using just one colour, wrap the thread around the cardboard 20 times.

If you use two colours, wrap each around 10 times.

If you use three colours, wrap seven times each.

Start as with the red thread below and wrap up the back and down for one.

Once you have wrapped all three colours, slide each one off the cardboard and lay them out so the three strands make one strand.

Wrap this three colour strand around the cardboard just like with the individual colours.

Cut a piece of yarn of one of the three colours to tie them together.

Bend the piece of yarn and slide the bent part under wrapped yarn on the cardboard.

Put the loose ends of the yarn over the coloured yarn and through the loop.

Pull tight and toward the top of the cardboard.

Flip the cardboard over and use scissors to cut the yarn at the bottom of the cardboard.

If you don’t flip before you cut, the tassel will be uneven and you will have to trim half the pieces.

Slide another piece of yarn under the created tassel.

Tie in a reef knot (left over right and under, right over left and under)

Pick a pony bead that matches and slide it down the two strands at the top of the tassel.

You will have to pull hard to get the bead over the tassel and down where it was tied in a bob.

Trim any uneven yarn at the bottom of the tassel.

Tie the tassel onto your favourite homemade bookmark in a reef knot.

I have made a bunch of these jumbo popsicle stick bookmarks with an array of colourful tassels.
