We still have snow on the ground and actually got 10cm of fresh snow in the last couple days. With the days getting longer and warmer, I start to look at making things related to spring. Last week I put away the snow and snowman related decorations I had brought out after Christmas. One of those decorations was a snowflake napkin holder. I realized that I don’t have my plain napkin holder as it goes with our dining room table that is still in Fort Mac. I decided that I needed to make one and thought that an Easter one would be appropriate.
I brought out my coloured wooden bunnies that look like giant peeps.
I decided to use the same shape for the outside of the napkin holder.
It was above 0° in the garage so it was warm enough to be in there working.
I traced one bunny onto two scrap 1″x 4″ pieces and cut it out using the bandsaw.
The base was just a scrap piece of 1″x 6″ cut 2” long. I did a light hand sanding on everything.
I then painted the pieces to match our kitchen cupboards.
The bunnies are the correct tone of blue but a shade lighter. The base an off white colour.
I glued the bunnies onto the base then used our brad nailer to secure them.
My husband is a firm believer in always nailing a project as glue doesn’t hold forever. Most often, I don’t think nailing is necessary but I do it anyhow just so he stops nagging. I added a coat of matte Polycrylic to protect the paint job.
I didn’t like the seeing nail holes so I found some thin wooden hearts I had bought from the dollar store and glued one on each bunny over the nail holes. Like with my other bunnies, I decided to add a bit of raffia. My husband asked if the heart was supposed to be the bunny’s butt. Maybe I should add a pom pom or piece of cotton??
This was a pretty quick project to make and fairly small so it will be easy to pack away with my other Easter decor. My next napkin holder will be a summer one so I am thinking about doing slices of watermelon or flowers. Stay tuned.
Rabbit 🐇 looks good!
