My husband has up on his work cabinet, printed out pictures of projects he wants to build.
Sometimes, when figuring out what our next wood project will be, it all comes down to materials. We have a number of 2X4 boards left by the previous owner that aren’t in the best shape; you wouldn’t use them for building structures of any kind.
He grabbed three of those 2X4’s and set to work.
The first step was running each board through the table saw so it became two 2×2 boards. Next he cut each board into 6” pieces.
I was in charge of placing the pieces. The pieces with straight grain went around the outside while those with knots and darker spots created a heart on the inside. There were more of those without grain so the three on each outer heart bump were knot pieces as well.
He glued all the pieces together with Weldbond and let it dry for a few hours.
Our gravel driveway extends around the side of the garage and it has become the area where burning takes place. He laid the heart down onto two 4X4’s on the gravel.
Here is a short clip of him burning. The propane torch is very loud. He used to burn things with it on our driveway in our cul-de-sac in Fort Mac. Probably drove the neighbours crazy.
After the burned heart was cooled off, he used the restorer to take off most of the charr and allow the grain to rise.
He decided on one layer of Tung Oil and then Wipe-on Poly to finish it.
Here it is against our fireplace where there is more natural light.
And a side view to show the raised grain.
I am really pleased with how this turned out.
It may end up on the wall in our dining area.
The idea of using crappy 2X4’s gave me ideas with what do with some of our other wood scrap…stayed tuned for those projects.
