I had played with a few different knitting patterns just after Remembrance Day for making poppies. I didn’t have the correct “red” that I wanted at the time so I used a brighter red and a maroon colour to practice with. This week I made multiple poppies using a cheap super value wool but the colour was what I wanted. This pattern makes a poppy about 4” in diameter with four bumps on the flower.

Using 3mm needles Cast on 48St
Knit 10 rows (make ten boxes on a piece of paper and mark them off as you go)
Row 11: K2tog (24 st)
Row 12: slip st, K2tog, pull slip st over the K2tog and off needle; repeat to end of row (8 st)
Cut yarn leaving maybe 8 inches. Thread the tail onto a darning needle. Slip all stitches onto the darning needle. Pull the darning needle through the stitches and pull yarn tight.
Weave the yarn to close the flower. Tie the cast on tail to the cast off tail in a knot.
Find a black button and sew it onto the center with black thread. It works on either side of the poppy.

To reduce the size you can cast on 36 or 24 st but you lose a bump on the flower for each decrease of 12 st. I tried it to see if I could make a smaller poppy but it started to just resemble a red circle the less bumps you had.
I added a few to my Remembrance ledge and they stand out nicely.

I am hoping this works. I wanted to share this video that the Fort McMurray legion posted about ten days ago on Facebook. It is an interview from 2008 with a good friend of ours from Fort McMurray who was one of the first soldiers in Afghanistan. We only met Dale after we moved to Fort McMurray and he doesn’t talk much about his years in the military. I learned things in this video that I hadn’t heard before. I thank him for his service.
Thanks for the film!
