When I think of summer colours, my mind is often taken to light coloured jeans worn with white flowing shirts.
It was for this reason that I wanted denim as the predominate colour in my summer wreath. I thought the burlap would be nice also as it reminds me of the yellow fields in summer just before harvest.
I started with a three ring wreath form. I chose two different pairs of jeans, one dark and one light. I cut the front side of one leg of each pair into six inch sections then cut those sections into 1/2” strips.
For the burlap ribbon, I used a 1” ribbon that I had. It was thicker than the one that I used for my Easter wreath. I cut six inch sections and then cut each piece down the middle to make 1/2” strips.
For this wreath, I ended up using both the front and back of one leg from both pairs of jeans. I did a pattern of “light, dark, light, dark, burlap” tying each piece onto the wire form in a reef knot. When making a tied wreath, I would suggest you tie onto the lower most wire first to make it easier.
Here is the wreath after finishing the three layers.
The burlap, having been cut, did fray a bit as I tied it on but it somehow made it blend into the jean material better.
I decided to add some of my harvested wheat from last fall. I cut some full wheat stocks leaving just enough of the chaff to tie it onto the wreath with some wire. I thought that not gluing it on would allow me to change the decoration in the future.
The last addition was another denim flower made with the lighter jean material.
It is hot enough here that it already feels like summer so it is a good time to hang this one up on our door.
