We have this odd door configuration in our master bath. You walk in and the door swings in to the right. Right behind that open door was another door for a small closet where the toilet is. Essentially, when the doors were both open they hit each other. We removed the door for the privy (sometimes it feels like that) so that there is just the door for the bathroom. One problem solved.

This door to the bathroom, like all the doors in our house, is a solid core door. Fancy right? Irritating is more like it. A solid core door is heavy so you can’t just open it and expect it to stay because the weight of it makes it want to swing shut again. If I just go into the washroom to get something or brush my hair, I don’t want the door to shut behind me.

We have doorstops from other house that we have had. Cheap plastic angled devices but the door actually swung right over them. I imagine a large rubber doorstop would work but I wasn’t willing to go and spend money on something I could create using wood. I also could have just used a block of wood but I decided that I wanted something more aesthetically pleasing.

I took a piece of scrap 2X4 and sanded it clean. Next I drew a side view of a stretching cat onto it. There was a fair amount of erasing and redrawing to get it to look the way that I wanted. I was able to cut it out with the band saw.

In all honesty, I wasn’t sure it would be heavy enough to keep the door from moving. The arms outstretched under the door seem to help to lock it in place.

The last step was to paint it and I thought it should match the doors so I just made my cat a white cat.

Now, when I just want to go in and out of the bathroom the door stays at a 45° angle. It is easy enough to release the cat when I want to shut the door.
Problem solved.
