Every year there seems to be a fad with wood crafters at Christmas. There is often one product being made and sold at craft sales or on Etsy more than others. This year I feel like it is this Christmas tree and I can see why. All it is is five pieces of wood cut exactly the same and one more piece plus the base.
I showed my husband, Chris, after seeing some selling on marketplace for way too much money. He latched right onto the idea and headed into the garage to make one. I am still a bit uncomfortable myself with making angled cuts with the mitre saw and keeping my measurements correct.
Most of the examples we saw on Pinterest or YouTube had these crazy measurements for the pieces like 14 13/16. As long as you keep the ratio between the shorter boards and longer one, why not use simple measurements. He had 6” shorter boards and a 7” longer one. The base is 12”. The overhang for the side pieces was 1”. All the ends cut at 30°. Any 1” thick board would work and you can make the trees as tall as you like.
Although I like the plain tree, I felt like it needed a star. I used one of the wooden stars that I cut from a wood slice last year. I decided to add some lyrics as well.
Adding the removable shelf, I placed my mini manger figures on it.
Next I tried my wooden Mary, Joseph and Jesus in the manger.
I think I like the last photo the best.
I might try to staple on some battery operated mini lights as every star should shine.
These trees are really easy to make if you have something to cut the wood. We used wood glue and the brad nailer to join the pieces. There are lots of different versions of this tree out there, some painted white, green or red and others with a burned look. For myself, I prefer the natural wood look.
It’s lovely! Way to go Chris!
I agree with the natural wood look. Angles have always been a challenge for me. Great job on this one.
