I was out for a walk yesterday to see how much the snow had gone down. It was quite warm out, almost 10°. There were flies about lazily sleeping on the sunny side of the house. I also noticed this wild honey bee. It had come over to investigate this piece of maple that my husband was grinding down and sanding.
The queen sends out scouts to look for good locations for a new nest. Soon all our trees will flower and the honey bees will begin pollinating the trees. Last year I would go outside and hear the heavy drone of bees hard at work every day. Once they are done with the trees they move onto the dandelions and wild roses.
I stumbled upon one of our wild Prairie Chickens yesterday while strolling in the creek. I hadn’t seen any since late fall.
The geese are flying over daily now and we see them congregating on the neighbouring fields eating any remnants from last year’s crops.
Our moose sightings have been fewer and only one or two when we do see them. I imagine they have started to move north to cooler weather.
Soon the Robins will return and begin building their nests and we will hear the spring croaking of frogs.
Another sign of spring is the catkins on the willow trees. The moose have eaten many of the willow branches that I can reach but I managed to find a few today that I could snip.
I brought some into the house to add to my vase with my palm branch from church last Sunday.
They are a symbol of new life and their emergence often seems to line up with Easter.
Wishing everyone a Blessed Easter.
