The Craftiest Workshop

It is my husband, not I, starting this new hobby. Eventually I am sure I will try to make something but for now he is the one creating with the glass.

He took an all day stained glass class at our local Centre for the Creative arts. It gave him a good idea of what tools he needed, the types of glass there are and how long a project might take. That day he made this feather.

We have set up one of the basement bedrooms as his stained glass workshop. It is all dry walled but we still don’t have any flooring in. That is handy for sweeping up any stray glass pieces.

On one of his work trips to Edmonton he visited Bissett Stained Glass in Edmonton and purchased the tools and glass he needed to make some stained glass projects.

The first thing he does is print out or draws what he wants to create and sections it off.
He then creates cardboard sections.

He traces those sections onto pieces of glass then cuts them out, numbering each piece to remember where it goes.

He scores the glass then breaks it off on this honeycomb board to collect any shards.

He then smooths the glass edges using this grinder.

He lays them all out the way he wants them.

He built this light table with two long bulbs inside so he can better see how the glass will look in a window.

The last step is to wrap the edges of the glass in copper foil and solder it.

He set up this area for that stage.

Here are some of the ornament/window catchers he has made this far.

He purchased a variety of glass so future projects will have more of a variety of colour.

When he gets good enough (his words), he plans to create window panels to go in the small windows at the top of the wall of windows in our living room.

It is great to see him wanting to create. I enjoy afternoons where I am wood burning in one room while he is doing his stained glass next door.
