Though the title for this blog is most often used figuratively, this time I meant it literally. I have discovered that I need a stool to reach the upper cupboards and shelves in the closets, kitchen, pantry and laundry room in our new house.

All the ceilings in our new house are so high. So much so, that I can’t even reach the bottom of the top cupboards to open them, let alone actually put something in them. We do have a folding rubbermaid stool that I have been keeping in the space between the kitchen and pantry. I got tired last week, while organizing my closet, having to go and get the stool from the kitchen. I decided to find a picture online of a stool that looked easy to build and small enough that it could be stored right in our walk in closet.

I had just mentioned to my husband the other day that I wanted to make this stool. I was puttering around in the garage on Sunday and noticed my husband working on a project. I asked him what he was building and he says, “I am making you your stool.”

I find that he goes through phases with building things and this past weekend was one of those times where he was in the groove. He had sanded and finished two charcouterie boards and a cutting board plus he was working on a special project for our nieces. I figured, “if he wants to build me a stool, he can knock himself out.”

We have a large selection of 2X8 boards that were left by the previous owners so that is what he used to build it. He also wanted some practise using the pocket hole jig and this was a good project for it. And lastly, and most importantly, it gave him the opportunity to torch something.

It didn’t take him very long and he was able to sand, build, burn and finish it all in one afternoon.

I will probably still build another of these myself to put in one of the bedroom closets on the other side of the house.

I am trying to figure out another project I want built that is quick for him to build but also interesting enough that he will feel inclined to build it for me.
