My middle son Matthew gave me a great gift at Christmas.
He had ordered me a stack of basswood square wooden blanks.
I had been toying with an idea and hadn’t been able to figure out how to make it work.
As soon as I saw these wooden blanks, I knew they would be great for the project I had in mind.
Our family bought many houses as we moved from place to place on our military postings.
When I see a photograph of a house we lived in, the memories come rushing back.
I see our kids playing outside on the driveway, I recall hosting friends and family and I remember fondly all the neighbours we have had over the years.
I wanted to capture these houses, and thus these moments, using my wood burner.
Using a combination of old photos and google street view, I was easily able to burn all the houses onto these squares.
On the back of each square I burned in the addresses and the years that we lived there.
I could have added the house we are currently living in but I wanted this to be a memory project.
If we move again, it will be added.
Now I just need to figure out how I want to frame them altogether.
I am thinking about using an old window or door frame with nine panels.
No matter where we have lived it was always the family, friends and neighbours that entered our house that made it a home.
That is why home is where the heart is.
What an awesome road of memories, my girl!
